Your 2012 AL Rookie of the Year (Non-Mike Trout division)

content_img

(US Presswire)

It hardly seems fair. Any number of restaurant-quality rookie campaigns in the AL are going to be overlooked because decided to foil the suspense by authoring perhaps the greatest debut season in history. So let us give the distant remainder its due.

We’re asking this: In a lesser universe in which Trout did not exist (perish this thought), who should have been AL Rookie of the Year?

put ‘s in second place and also found ‘ , ‘s and Oakland’s worthy of mention.

Elsewhere, of the and of the A’s merit a nod, but both lacked the playing time necessary for serious consideration. On the pitching side, down-ballot worthies included  of the A’s, of the , of the , of the Rays, of the and Kelvin Herrera of the . They, however, don’t stack up to Darvish or Parker (and neither does Chen, for that matter).

So the merits of each serious contender not named Mike Trout:

Cespedes dgers is determined not to pay over the odds for Harry Maguire’s replacement.Manchester United are set to swell the Leicester boss’ transfer kitty by a cool £85million to sign the Enited hero Gary Neville for celebrating Liverpool blowing their unbeaten Premier League run.The Reds, who return to league action against Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, saw their hopes of going the entirety of the 2019/20 Premier Leaguegland defender.Asked if he feared having to pay a premium now selli… He batted .292/.356/.505 and averaged an extra-base hit every 9.2 at-bats, and he did all that despite playing his home games in a pronounced pitcher’s park. On the bases, he swiped 16 bags in 20 attempts. His value in the field, though, is up for debate. The A’s liked him enough to allow him to log almost half his defensive innings in center, but the eye test suggests he’s not a plus glove at the position. He does, however, look much better in left, where he spent the narrow majority of his time. Ultimate Zone Rating doesn’t seem to think much of Cespedes’ defense, but those numbers are simply not to be trusted across single-year samples. While Cespedes’ reads off the bat leave a bit to be desired, he has more than enough speed to paper over that shortcoming. I’m comfortable calling him an asset in left.

Darvish … Like Cespedes, he toiled in a home yard that was hostile toward his interestsclosing on an agreement with Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes. The Benfica-star-Gedson-Fernandes-18-month-loan-deal.html” target=”_blank”>Daily Mail says Spurs are close to agreeing terms over an 18-month loan for Fernandes. The 21-year-old had been. In spite of that backdrop, Darvish posted a 116 ERA+ across 191 1/3 innings, ranked fifth in the AL in strikeouts and did a good job of keeping the ball in the park. Walks were an occasional problem, but he showed much better command after making some mechanical tweaks in early August. Darvish’s peripherals say his ERA should’ve been better than it was.

Parker … He notched a 114 ERA+ in 181 1/3 innings, so he falls just short of Darvish on those fronts. Parker’s K rate left a bit to be desired, but he made up for it by generally keeping the ball on the ground.

The call … Cespedes’ case would be air-tight if he hadn’t missed more than 30 games to various hand and leg injuries. Even so, Cespedes is the choice. The completeness of his game in tandem with the inherent advantage that position players have over pitchers when it comes to overall value makes Cespedes the 2012 AL Rookie of the Year.

Except for Mike Trout, of course.

When he does come back, will he supplant current closer ?

“I don’t give a [expletive], frankly,” Bailey said ().

Prospect spotlight: Mariners RHP Taijuan Walker

content_img

(Getty Images)

Standing next to Taijuan Walker, the last thing you think is that this is a 19-year-old kid. However, for at least another couple of weeks, that’s just what he is — 19 with an amazing right arm.Walker’s listed at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, and is every bit of it. A prep basketball start in California, Walker looks like he would be a nice slasher from the perimeter with the athleticism to attack the rim. Instead, he’s attacking hitters in Double-A. The ‘ top pick in the 2010 draft (43rd overall), Walker breezed through the Midwest League last year and the team had him skip high-Class A to see how he fared against more advanced players. The numbers — Walker’s 7-6 with a  4.12 ERA at Jackson — don’t tell the exact story about the right-hander. Through the first two months of the season, he was 4-1 with a 2.23 in nine starts, striking out 44 and walking just 14 in 44 1/3 innings in the first two months. He struggled in June — giving up 21 earned runs in five starts (going 0-3 with a 9.15 ERA) but has settled back down in July, giving up half the runs he did in the previous month while pitching 6 1/3 more innings.Much of his struggles, he said, was trouble with his curveball, which is a pitch he never threw before turning pro. The Mariners shelved his slider to avoid putting stress on his elbow, just like they did with early in his career. During his struggles earlier this year, Walker admitted he was tempted to talk to his catcher and pull his slider back out, just to get through the stretch.”I want to. I’m really, really thinking about doing that,” he joked last month. “I want to. It’s hard not to, especially when my curveball isn’t there. I just want to call the catcher out and tell him, ‘we’re going to throw sliders today, scrap the curveball.”He already had his line for his pitching coach practiced — “It was a curveball, it just broke weird.”But in the end, he knows the Mariners are looking out for his long-term success — something they believe will come. One scout told CBSSports.com, “I never like to anoint guys, but he’s special.”Walker’s special because of his physique, the fact he throws an easy high-90s fastball and the curve and main on loan in the Spanish capital for the 2019-20 campaign, after which the agreement will become permanent.Morata arrived in west London from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 and went on to score 24 goals in 72 appearances for the Blues. He moved change up are developing. But more than that, the team loves his work ethic and his maturity. After the 2011 season, the 19-year-old decided to move his offseason home away from his California hometown to the Phoenix area so that he could spend more time at the Mariners’ training complex.”I’m a huge family guy and I didn’t want to leave my family. I had to do it for me and my career,” Walker said. “Hopefully it will all work out and I’ll be able to spend more time with the my family instead of staying in the minors a long time because i went to and got the extra work. You’ve got to dedicate yourself to the game. It’s your job.”And ultimately, that’s why he’s working out with the Seattle staff in the offseason and following their plans for his slider even though it means there could be bumps in the road. Int he end, the Mariners believe they have another ace — and with the likes of Danny Hultzen and James Paxton on the way as well, you can see why the Mariners were OK with trading Michael Pineda last offseason. • For the first time as a professional, right-hander pitched into the seventh inning on Wednesday night. Pitching for high-Class A Frederick, Bundy went 6 2/3 innings, retiring 16 of the final 17 batters he faced. He was pulled from the game after reaching his pitch count. Bundy allowed two hits and an unearned run while striking out eight and walking two. In 10 starts at Frederick, Bundy is 5-3 with a 2.57 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 49 innings.•  third baseman knocked in eight runs for low-Class A Peoria in an 11-10 victory. GeigCenk Tosun hopes to stay with Everton. The Turkey striker has been linked with a return to former club Eintracht Frankfurt. But Turkish Football says Tosun has intimated he wants to stay at Goodison Park.Tosun has hopes of featuring for Everton tonight against Carabao Cup opponents Lincoln City.He scored four goals in 29 competitive games last season.er, serving as the team’s DH, went 4 for 5 with a double and two home runs. The 20-year-old hit a three-run homer in the first, a three-run double in the fifth and two-run homer in the ninth. A 24th-round pick in 2010, Geiger hit just .206 in July, but eight of his 22 hits were home runs in the month. He has 13 on the season.• In his first start for the organization, right-hander allowed just one hit and an unearned run, while striking out seven in five innings for Double-A Huntsville. He’s 6-10 with a 3.25 ERA this season. The 6-foot-9 Hellweg has 95 strikeouts and 62 walks in 124 2/3 innings this season. The top prospect in the deal, shortstop , has seven hits in 16 at-bats in his four games for Huntsville. The third player, right-hander , didn’t do so well, giving up five earisited his disappointing departure from Arsenal. He has rebuilt his career in La Liga and moved on from his injury hell – but being denied a proper farewell to Gunners fans remains a “big sore spot”.Speaking to Marca about his departure, Cazorla reveaned runs on seven hits on Monday.• Last year’s fifth overall pick, Kansas City’s , is finally playing every day, playing 27 games for the Rookie Appalachian League Burlington . So far he’s hitting .275/.378/.495 with five home runs and five stolen bases. He’s striking out more than once a game — 35 Ks in 27 games — but for a player who hadn’t played as much baseball as his peers, it’s an encouraging start for the ultra-talented outfielder.

Prospect spotlight: Astros 2B Delino DeShields Jr.

content_img

LEXINGTON, Ky. — On Baseball-Reference.com, Delino DeShields’ first full season in professional baseball looks downright dreadful. The ’ first-round pick in 2010 spent all of 2011 at low Class-A Lexington and hit just .220/.305/.322 with 118 strikeouts in 119 games. By all measures, that’s not what you’d like to see from a guy who was taken eighth overall, five spots ahead of , and given a $2.15 million signing bonus. But that’s not how DeShields sees it. Not at all.“Last year it wasn’t about how well I hit or how many bags did I steal, it was about me improving as a second baseman,” DeShields said earlier this week. “This year, the plan was to put it all together and see what we have and take that and move on. “For me, [2010] was a [success]. It might not look like it to other people, for me and our organization, it was a success.”The speedy DeShields was moved from the outfield to second, with his first exposure to second base coming in spring training of 2011. He went from spring to full-season Lexington and learned a new position as one of the youngest players in Tottenham as historic.Bayern thrashed their Champions League opponents 7-2 in London last night.Rummenigge declared: “Our team has written some history. I would like to congratulate the coaching team with Niko (Kovac) on top and also the entire teamthe league.“After games, I’m mentally exhausted, just because there’s so many things you do, you have to think about, know where to go,” DeShields said. “Last year was hard, because I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. Now it’s like second nature. Sometimes I don’t even know I’m do things I should be doing, because it’s a second nature.”This season he’s repeating the low-Class A level, but despite being in his second year at Lexington, he’s still the team’s second-youngest player at 19. While his relative youth compared to the rest of his teammates hasn’t changed from last season to this season, everything else seemingly has. Through 79 games, he’s hitting .276/.384/.401 with six home runs and ranking third in the South Atlantic League with 64 runs scored and a league-leading 58 stolen bases.Speed has always been DeShields’ calling card, as it would be expected of the son Delino DeShields, who had 463 career stolen bases. This season his 58 stolen bases has already set a Lexington team record, and his 88 swipes for the Legends is the team’s career record. On Tuesday, he was honored before the game with the base for his 57th stolen base, which set the new record. He then walked and stole second in the first inning to increase his season total. You can see his 58th stolen base of the season here:Most seasons, DeShields’ 58 stolen bases would be the best in the minor leagues, but he just happens to be in the minors at the same time as ’s Billy Hamilton, who stole his 100th base of the season on July 2 and has 101 going into Thursday’s games for high-Class A Bakersfield.“I think what I’ve done is pretty good, but, 100 bags?” DeShields laughs when asked about Hamilton, who was managed by his father last year at low-Class A Dayton when he became the first minor-leaguer in a decade to reach the century mark in stolen bases. While DeShields is pretty sure he can’t catch Hamilton (who can, in any sense of the word?), he’s still eyeing 100 for the season.“It’s really cool. Even if he has 150 bags, it’d be cool if there would be two guys with 100 bags, that’d be special,” DeShields said.He can do it, too — if he continues on his current pace, he’d finish with 99 steals. He’s been caught 10 times, but his .384 on-base percentage and increased walk rate means he has a chance to get on base enough for 100 stolen bases. He needs just one more walk to match his walk total will leave City at the end of the season after 10 years.“I like and we need players on the pitch – experienced, intelligent ones – who see things,” Guardiola said. “We need that.“About what David will do, I don’t know, but it would be nice [if heof all of last season.“If he can get on base, he can get to that point,” said Legends manager Ivan De Jesus, who had 194 stolen bases of his own in his 15-year career. “He can get to that point with walks, knowing the strike zone better. I think he needs to get better contact, but I think he’ll get there. he’s got a quick bat, he can wait for the ball longer. We can expect a lot for him because it’s only his second year. We have to be patient with him because he’s playing another position and it’s going to take time to get to that point.”And that’s fine with DeShields, having already seen results from last year to this, he’s willing to work and wait his time, even if it’s not as fast as others expect him to move up the minor-league ladder.“Anyone taken in the first round is going to have pressure because you’re a team’s first pick,” DeShields said. “I’m always gof Brett Pitman. The former Cherries striker is tied to Luton Town, but has been granted permission to return to Dean Court to train. The 32-year-old initially linked up with the under-21s but asked to join in with Connell’s squad as Shaun Cooper’s grouing to have pressure on me, because of my dad too. I was the Astros’ first pick in 2010 and my dad was in the big leagues for 13 years, so people expect me to be there at least 14.“I’ve always had pressure, always. I think I’ve handled it well. I’ve had people say that I’m not good enough, all that stuff. That’s just people talking and that doesn’t have anything to do with me. You can say what you want to say, but I know what I can do. And it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.”• In 11 games since coming back from a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a drug of abuse, former top overall pick is hitting .326/.404/.500 with two home runs for Triple-A Durham. Beckham, 22, was hitting .204/.290/.278 in 13 games before his suspension.• With the start of the short-season leagues, we can finally see some numbers from one of 2011’s most talked-about draftees, Kansas City’s . The fifth overall pick last season, Starling is an incredibly talented outfielder, but very raw. However, he’s been pretty good in his first six pro grams, hitting .360/.484/.680 in 25 at-bats for short-season Burlington, including two home runs and nine RBI. While he has seven strikeouts, he does have five walks.Starling hit two homers on Monday.• After a slow start, outfielder is on fire, with hits in 18 of his last 20 games. Over that stretch he’s hitting .388/.447/.518 with a home run and seven stolen bases. That’s helped his overall line improve to .273/.346/.368. He has three home runs and 22 stolen bases on the season, but has been caught 13 times (three in the last 20 games).• Baseball America came out with its Midseason Top 50 prospects list, with right-hander atop the list. The Lineup: Zambrano does it all, Bard’s abysmal outing and the return of Vanimal

Sunday was chock full of great pitching performances. We didn’t even get a chance to mention the likes of , , , , , , or in . Any one of them would be a worthy candidate most any night of the season. The circumstances for the guys below — as well as Zito and Cahill shutting down what equate to Triple-A teams — separated these three by the slimmest of margins. The man called Big Z stepped to the plate in the top of the third inning of a scoreless game and powered up, crushing a solo homer to left-center. And though his teammates came through with four more runs on the afternoon, Zambrano didn’t need that much support. He worked 7 2/3 innings, allowing only four hits and one”.Richarlison admits his success in England has been a whirlwind. He told the Daily Mail: “Four years ago I was at home in Brazil with just dreams but look at me now. “Things happen quickly, don’t they? I think I just have to make the most of it. I he run while striking out seven . One of the centerpieces of the trade last July, the 23-year-old right-hander entered Sunday with a career line of 4-7, 6.75 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. White was also carrying the burden of easing the workload on an overworked bullpen and facing the first-place (yes, we know Matt Kemp is out; they’re still in first). White went out and gave the Rockies 6 2/3 strong innings, allowing only two hits and two runs. The five walks were bad, but he worked around them enough to propel . And the Rockies have won six of their last seven. The Astros entered Sunday with no listed starting pitcher and an eight-game losing streak. They were also facing a red-hot team. Lyles was summoned from Triple-A to make the start and allowed only five hits and two runs in seven innings, shoving his This was a rare outing where both teams desperately wanted the starting pitcher out of the game. Bard lasted just 1 2/3 innings. He walked six and only allowed one hit, but it was a three-run home run. He also hit two batters. In fact, the last three batters he faced went: Hit-by-pitch, bases-loaded walk, hit-by-pitch. He blatantly had no clue where the ball was going. Bard was then mercifully removed from the game and showered with boos from the fans — and probably any Red Sox fans in attendance, too. The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner has now lost three straight starts. In his last two outings, Verlander has given up 19 hits, 10 runs (eight earned) and six walks in 12 1/3 innings. Sunday it was a 5-1 loss to the . I wouldn’t stress much about Verlander — especially since he’s only gotten five runs in support in these last three outings — but more about the Tigers in general. When you’re only 6-6 through 12 Verlander starts, that’s just not good enough. Well, that nine-run game Saturday was sure washed away quickly, huh? After a 2-0 loss Sunday to the , the A’s have now been shut out 11 times in their first 53 games. Per CBSSports.com’s Danny Knobler, the A’s join the 1954 as the only team to be held scoreless this often, this early since 1918. The are in last place, but they’re still over .500 (28-27) and are only 3.5 games back. They’re just waiting on getting some pieces back from injury. Vance Worley (3-2, 3.07) is one of them, and he’ll return to the hill Monday night after being activated from the DL. His offensive teammates will have their hands full, because they’re facing off against (4-3, 2.42) of the Dodgers. Of course, the Dodgers need a win pretty badly, as they’ve lost eight of 11 and have a certain rival approaching in the rearview mirror. The have dropped 10 consecutive road games and now it’s ‘s turn to try and stop the bleeding. Of course, pitching hasn’t been the problem, as the Cubs continue to waste gem after gem from their staff. It’s the hitting. So Samardzija (5-3, 3.09) better be prepared to throw a shutout. The Giants, meanwhile, are playing really solid baseball and have crept to within three games of the Dodgers in the NL West. (3-2, 2.36) takes the mound in hopes of leading his team to a sweep. The have been outscored 19-1 by the in three games, and that includes having been no-hit by , shut out by and struck out 10 times by Jonathon Niese. They’re surely desperate to get out of Queens, only they have another game to play. Monday, the Mets go for the four-game sweep of the reeling defending champs. A win for the Mets means first place in the NL East (they’re tied with the Marlins and Nats, both of which are idle Monday). A loss for the Cardinals means they’ll be below .500 for the first time all season. (4-3, 4.69) will get the ball for the Mets while (5-1, 3.36) starts for the Cardinals. • Outfielder made a no-hitter-saving catch for Johan Santana Friday night. He also sacrificed his body in doing so, crashing into the left-field wall, and he’ll miss about six weeks with injuries to his collarbone, sternum and ribs. on Queens native Baxter and his background. • Earlier this week, , and looked to how the uses replay as a fine example of what can be done. Sunday, . Assuming this wasn’t a total ripoff — and I trust it wasn’t — this is a sign that the Internet is starting to get soid chief Emilio Butragueno admits they’re fed-up with VAR.Butragueno was left frustrated by the use of VAR in Los Blancos’ 0-0 draw at home to Real Betis on Saturday night, with a Zou Feddal handball the subject of much debate.”We are confused about me momentum with the idea. Let’s hope it continues. If the talk gets loud enough, commissioner Bud Selig will have to listen. At least in theory. • After Johan Santana’s no-hitter Friday night, the Post-Dispatch ran their article with an asterisk, due to a missed call. The Daily News fired back, strongest with “apparently, the Post-Dispatch couldn’t find the asterisk key while Mark McGwire was swatting 220 steroid-aided home runs while a member of the Cardinals and setting bogus records in St. Louis.” Zing!

Cool, a newspaper feud. Daily News fires on PD

— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) • I’ve long bemoaned the fact that major-league umpires scream back at managers, coaches and players, making tWatford are moving for West Brom defender Craig Dawson.Sky Sports says Watford have agreed a fee for Dawson. The Baggies have accepted a £5.5m bid for the 29-year-old, who made 45 appearances in all competitions last season. It is claimed that the deal will be completed on Monday, with Dawson set to sign a four-year contract at Vicarage Road, with an option for an extra year.hem the only officials in sports who do so. There was another run-in Saturday night when Yankees manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long got pretty heated with — shocker alert — Bob Davidson. Davidson has already been suspended for one game this season and has a penchant for making himself the center of attention. Sunday, Yankees center fielder — also one of the most eloquent players in the league — asked for more accountability from the umpires. “It’s interesting across the board,” Granderson said (). “You’ve seen a lot of missed plays. They’re humans back there. They’re going to make some mistakes. But part of the game is, sometimes there have to be some consequences for it. As players, if we make mistakes, there are consequences for us. You get errors, you get pulled out, possibly sent down. Different stuff happens to us. There has to be a similar type of situation on the other end. The one thing I’ve seen consistently, the umpire can be as loud and as animated as he wants, and the umpire gets to stay in the ballgame.”• More on Zambrano’s home-run prowess: He’s now tied for sixth all-time with 24 home runs as a pitcher. The record-holder is Wes Ferrell, with 38. Remember, this is home runs as a pitcher, so Babe Ruth has already been passed (he only hit 14 as a pitcher). []• In addition to great pitching, another storyline Sunday was prodigious home runs. Zambrano’s shot was 431 feet. And then there’s this:

4 HR today calculated at 440+ feet by our HR-tracking crew: 484, 455, 450, 441
