Report: Magic still open for firesale on roster

(Getty Images)

The problem with the trade is that it’s going to take a significant amount of time before you can responsibly judge it. It certainly doesn’t seem, based on a “export vs. import” approach that they were anything but hosed on the deal. But if in a year, they have a strong young core of players and little remainings a talented squad at the Addicks, Field arrived on transfer deadline day for the Championship clubs. He had his medical and becomes the 10th addition to the squad this summer. The 21-year-old will spend the entire season at Charlton, where he hopes to salary, what then? You have to wait and see what they did with the assets, and what they do next.

And the word is that they have every intention of trying to liquidate the remaining roster. From the Orlando Sentinel:

They are open for business to any team that is interested in the likes of holdovers , , , Big Baby Davis and . And those players also might be looking to join a team that’s not competing for lottery prizes the next few seasons.Vets and , who both arrived in the Dwight deal, also will be there for the asking. What do the Magic want in return to jettison any of those deals? Ideally, expiring contracts and/or draft picks.

via  BasketBlog – Orlando Sentinel.

There’s not a whole lot there, and predictably there will be people who say they won’t be able to move any of those players. But we’ve seen from several moves in the past three years that anyone is tradeable. If can get moved, can get moved. Additionally, Hedo Turkogler City youth coach is Vincent Kompany’s No2 at s spoken to Marko Grujic about a move away from Liverpool, it has been revealed.Werder are rivaling Hertha Berlin, where the midfielder spent last season on-loan, for the Serb this summer.BILD says Kohfeldt has called Grujic about his plans for him athe Belgian giants. But after a dismal start to the season, HLN says Anderlecht chiefs are seeking to add greater expertise to the bench. The move has the support of Kompany – with Davies the most likely u’s contract is only partially guaranteed in the future, giving them the opportunity to unload it without trading it.

The Magic are going to be bad for several years. But if they can take the three picks they picked up in the deal, package them with any others they can sneak away and their own, they might be able to get multiple picks in the top 15. And that puts you far ahead on the plan. Just look at the . The Magic aren’t ruined forever. Just for a while.

Of course, it would have helped if they hadn’t just re-signed Jameer Nelson to a multi-year deal…

Sixers-Celtics Game 7: The Big 3 aren’t done yet

content_img

(Getty Images) Don’t try and understand it, you’ll only make your head hurt. Somehow, someway, the , left for dead after the start of the season, managed to pull it together and enter the playoffs on a hot streak. Then, they struggled with Atlanta. But then they rallied, and advanced. They were set to face the Sixers, who were thought to be outmatched in every conceivable way. Instead, the Sixers pushed them to seven games. But again, the Celtics advanced. More on 76ers-CelticsRelated links The Celtics never make it easy. Never have. Their first playoff series with the Big 3 together in the first-round of 2008 featured the Atlanta Hawks pushing them to seven games despite Atlanta’s inexperience. They went to seven games with an inferior (relatively speaking) Cavaliers team. They went to seven games against the Burid ahead of their secnchester United signing Odion Ighalo has been seen at Carrington for the first time today.Ighalo, 30, joined United on transfer deadline day last month from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. But he has yet to train with his new teammates sinond leg tie at Anfield on Wednesday. The Reds manager is not happy at what he perceives as a lack of sportsmanship from Atleti players.Diego Simeone’s team have often been accused of excessive fouling and other “dark arts” by opplls in Derrick Rose’s first foray into the playoffs, lost to the Magic (without ). Never easy. But that has made them tougher, more confident, more unshakeable. And here they are. The Big 3 Era Celtics have returned to the Eastern Conference Playoffs for the third time in five years Saturday night, expelling the Sixers in an 85-75 fight to the bone. The ride continues. For a lot of teams, making it this far would have meaning. It’s a sense of accomplishment in and of itself. But like their opponent, the Miami Heat, this level means nothing to them. It’s nothing but a set up to the final act. It had to end like this, you know. The Celtics were the first superstar team up formed through front-office moves that weren’t built around drafting. They kicked off the arms race in 2008, the Heat were formed two years later in 2008. Both have reached the ECF in less than perfect fashion. Both have a distaste for each other. And to top it all off, the Eastern Conference Finals feature the two teams that have lost the past two Finals. Ominous, that. For , Garnett, and , it’s tempting to say this is their last hurrah in the Eastern Finals. Garnett and Allen are free agents after this year, the Celtics have been delaying rebuilding efforts to give this team one more shot. Allen, his ankle in shambles, is a shell of who he is normally due to the bone spurs plaguing him, still closed out the Sixers with two key three pointers in the fourth of Game 7. They were the only two he took. Garnett, thought to be doomed due to age and ‘s impressive defense, found just enough offense, defense, and key plays to be the difference in helping the Celtics keep the lead in a game everyone played poorly. And I mean, everyone. And while was the hero, it will still be these three that will be judged most vs. the Heat. Boston is supposed to have a mental edge over Miami, despite last year’s playoff series. They’re supposed to be tougher. Even if the Heat are the better team, so what? The Hawks were arguably better. The Sixers arguably played better for the duration of the series. And yet here the three are, ready to take on LeBron James and Dwyane Wade who they have plauged over the years. What’s on the line? A second title changes quite a bit for Garnett, Pierce, and company. It puts them in another level as multiple-time champions.  Most importantly, it validates the Big 3 era, which, without a second title, is honestly thought of as a disappointment. But we’ll haveging Arsenal to move for Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech.Boulahrouz says Ziyech’s playing style fits “very well” with “a number of clubs”.”In that regard, I think Bayern Munich and Arsenal have really gone to sleep,” he said on FOX Sports. “He is a play time for that. For now, they’re here. Despite everything, despite reason and logic, the old guys are here, ready to grind it out in the mud with the most talented team in the land. No one expects much from them except themselves. The problem is, that very scenario is how they wound up here. The Eastern Conference Finals begin Monday at 8:30 p.m. EST.

Kevin McHale says the lockout was why he didn’t get along with his Rockets players last season

content_img

(Getty Images)

It took a full season for those outside of to catch on to what was happening. We’d become so accustomed to things running normally for the Rockets. Even with a new coach, as long as the Rockets were chugging along at their almost-but-not-quite-playoffs pace, everything seemed to be status quo in what was a difficult season to keep track of because of the frenetic pace.

But late in the year, there started to be indications. ‘s diminished role. Some grousing from veterans. Then, what seemed out of the blue, star point guard  unloaded in the press about how he didn’t see things being repaired between coach Kevin McHale and him.

Lowry was traded to . was amnestied and picked up by . was traded to . Three rookies were drafted, including who plays a similar role to Martin.  was allowed to depart in free agency. It was change, change, everywhere.

Now with a younger roster that barely resembles the one that fell just a few winning percentage points short of the postseason, McHale prepares for a new year, and his line of thought is that the big reason for the discord last year? The lockout schedule. From the Houston Chronicle:

“It’s mucss. The left-back has fallen out of favour at bet365 Stadium, having spent the end of last season on loan at Amiens.Sean Dyche is looking at cover for Charlie Taylor after Stephen Ward’s departure this summer.Netherlands international Pieters, 30, joih more comfortable just knowing that we’re here, planning with the coaches, having players coming in and out, being able to talk to them about what we’re envisioning,” McHale, 54, said. “We’re just getting a comfort level with each other as opposed to havirighton and Crystal Palace could be in line to sign former Manchester United defender Rafael. The Brazilian has enjoyed a good spell at Lyon for the past few years. But the 29-year-old could be moved on for a modest fee this winter. He has been offered ng the lockout lifted, two days and then getting started.”

Last season, the first time most Rockets players heard McHale’s voice (unless they were fans of NBA TV or “Cheers” reruns) was when he was furious with the terrible and revealing first practice. As players pushed back, objecting to his changes and demands, McHale often cited the lockout and inability to forge relationships before he began the December rush to the season.

via .

McHale says in the interview that though the team is young, at least they’ll have a chance to build up from the ground. He’s specifically saying that the younger players are more willing to give him “one more” than the veterans were last year:

“I think that takes time,” McHale said. “Starting anew, just being around the guys helps. They got to realize that this is a job and it’s a hard job and there are times you are going to get on them, but it’s never personal.

“It’s different, but there is an excitement level to it with so many young guys you can mold and push in a direction you want. Last year, we almost had a work stoppage. I thought we were going to have a union picket line like we were working too hard. These guys, you push them, you tell them, ‘I need one more,’ they’re verto extend Ryan Kent’s loan deal. The 22-year-old starred for the Gers this season, but Kent’s parent club Liverpool have demanded a £12m bid to make the deal permanent. However, Gerrard remains hopeful he can convince his former club to loan the taleny willing workers. We got there last year, but it took probably two months.”

via .

It makes you wonder if McHale isn’t better suited to younger rosters that don’t have the veteran experience to go “No, not going to do that, Coach, but thanks.” It’s just a different approach. McHale wants his guys super-hungry, and the grind tends to get players to coast for long stretches of the year.

You’re going to want to keep an eye on how this team’s doing at the All-Star break and how worn down it is. If McHale’s belief is the lockout prevented him from pushing his players as much as he wanted last year, and he’s got more time and actual time for practices, the Rockets could be in for a … er … challenging season, physically.

As , “Physically, it could be bad timing for the Rockets.”

But if everyone buys in, McHale could push a young club to a big first step in its first year of the revamp.

Magic re-engage Nets, other teams in Dwight Howard trade talks

‘s inevitable divorce with the Orlando may have gotten just the motivation i6, has started the last 19 Premier League matches and already lined up in seven more games than in the entirety of his first campaign with United.A source close to the midfielder told the Manchester Evl make it tough for Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. The Blues welcome Hans Flick’s side to Stamford Bridge for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.Speaking after Saturday’s win over Spurs, the Dane said: ‘The win was so important becauening News: “It’s been a great past month. “He’s t needed.

Spurred by the ‘ decision to fill up their cap space by acquiring from Atlanta, the Magic are once again engaged in trade discussions for Howard with the Nets while also exploring options with other teams, league sources told CBSSports.com Tuesday.

More on Dwight HowardAnalysisRelated links More coverage | | |

The Nets scenario would be complicated and isn’t imminent, one of the sources said. It also isn’t the only one Orlando GM Rob Hennigan is working on. Atlanta, , the  and possibly are among the teams the Magic are trying to engage as the Howard situation may finally have reached a tipping point.

But one person briefed on the talks described Orlando’s posture with regard to trading Howard as “unhurried.” The Magic still hold leverage over Howard, who at some point must work with ty recovery at home.Demiral ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament with additional meniscus damage in January and was following a rehabilitation programme at the J-Medical Centre. However, with Serie A now suspended due to coronavirus concerns, Demirahe team on a mutually beneficial exit strategy. Howard surrendered his leverage in March when he waived his early-termination option for 2012-13, and with it his right to become a free agent this summer.

Indeed, according to another person briefed on the matter, there is little optimism even from Howard’s camp that the Nets can put together a realistic package for the All-Star.

After using most of its cap space to acquire Johnson and re-sign to a four-year, $40 million deal, Brooklyn seemed out of the Howard trade sweepstakes Monday night. In fact, Howard’s camp was deflated upon learning that the Nets had decided to move on with the Johnson scenario rather than wait for Orlando to engage them in trade talks for Howard.

“They got tired of waiting on Dwight,” one person involved in the process said.

The complicated scenario that the Nets and Magic have tried to resurrect would involve the signing-and-trading of and as well as promising guard and multiple future first-round picks. Ideally, the Magic are looking to unload one of their bad contracts in a Howard deal, either that of or .

Even though the re-signing of Wallace and acquisition of Johnson would put the Nets over the cap, their working figure includes cap holds for Lopez and Humphries, who could be flipped for Howard. It’s difficult to envision finding room for Turkoglu, who makes $11.8 million next season. But the Nets probably could absorb J-Rich’s $5.8 million and they have a $3 million trade exception into which another Richardson, Quentin, would fit.

But it’s far from certain that Orlando would deem the Nets’ offer palatable, considering they’ve had ample opportunity to deal with Brooklyn and have backed away every time — even in recent days, when the Nets had multiple expiring contracts they’ve since flipped to the  for Johnson.

The Magic, who want multiple young players, draft picks and cap relief in a Howard trade, plan to be thorough as they explore all possibilities.

In other words, step right up with your Dwight trade offers.

The biggest question about Kobe Bryant isn’t his Achilles

content_img

The latest on Kobe Bryant is that he as he continues to push through his rehab and recovery following surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles’ tendon. That’s the latest, but it isn’t really the news.

What’s important about this particular dose of Kobe news — a statement from the Lakers that he is “progressing well” boli president Fabrizio Corsi says they’re yet to field a concrete offer for Ismael Bennacer. The former Arsenal junior’s form this season has brought him to the attention of Napoli – and also has led to talk in Italy of the Gunners re-signng him.Arsenut that there is no timetable for his return to the court — has nothing to do, really, with that Achilles’ tendon.

It has to do with the rest of his body.

Let me explain.

As devastating as the injury was when Bryant’s in that April game against the Golden State Warriors, the repair and recovery are fairly straightforward. Plenty of athletes have ruptured their Achilles’ tendons. Plenty of basketball players have done it — Chauncey Billups, Elton Brand and Dominique Wilkins, to name a few. I know sports writers and TV people and CrossFitters who’ve done it.

As with any tendon injury, the rupture is repaired surgically and the tendon needs time to heal. Bryant, being a world-class athlete and a conditioning marvel of the modern sports era, will recover from that injury. Even at 35, his tendon will heal, the surrounding tissue will repair itself, and Bryant gradually will return to full, weight-bearing athletic activity involving a basketball and a hoop, as he has been doing for his entire adult life.

But what about the rest of him? That’s where the focus should be as Bryant makes the transition from rehab and recovery to strength and conditioning, and ultimately, to on-court performance.

Read this quote that Lakers spokesman John Black gave to the Los Angeles Times, and you will get an idea of what I mean: “One of the key issues is to make sure he builds up strength and endurance not only in his Achilles but also in his legs, knees, back and core.”

In my opinion, that isn’t merely one of the key issues. It’s the key issue.

Bear in mind that the hallmark of Bryant’s longevity has been a maniacal commitment to offseason strength and conditioning work. Bryant logged more than 54,000 minutes of regular season and playoff basketball before suffering a career-altering injury for a reason.

He has spoken sparingly throughout his career about his training regimen; trainer Tim Grover has given morll have to make do with only 5,257 tickets each for the UEFA Super Cup in August. Many English fans were unhappy at the paltry ticket allocations for the Champions League and Europa League finals respectively.UEFA has doubled down on their stance, offe detail than Bryant ever has in his book, “Relentless.” But in , Bryant divulged some of his secrets: Olympic weightlifting, sprinting and a will to push through pain and fatigue that most humans couldn’t fathom.

“Whatever your program is, the key is to push yourself to a level where you’re hurting,” Bryant said. “You can’t gain conditioning without going through it. You’re going to have to feel some pain, you’re going to have to feel like your lungs are burning, and you know, you want to spit up blood, that sort of thing.”

The Kobe Bryant we have witnessed for the past 17 years — a five-time champion, two-time scoring champion and one of the most durable and reliable athletes of our time — was not built from November to June. That Kobe Bryant was built from July to October. He was built with day after day of deadlifts, squats, snatches and cleans, and hour after hour of short-burst conditioning work — one sprint after another, until he felt like he was going to vomit blood.

When you understand that these are all things that Bryant has not been able to do from July to October for the first time in his career, you begin to understand that the surgically repaired tendon in his lower left leg is the least of his problems.

Basketball has nothing to do with baseball, and vice versa. Inter Milan striker Facundo Colidio has signed on-loan with Sint Truiden. He has been linked with Leeds United, Lecce and Frosinone, but now has completed the temporary switch to Sint-Truiden.Colidio will spend the season in Belgium.#WelcomeFacundo Meer info over onze nieuwe speler via https://t.co/nl2g9bn3Wx.#STVV#Transfers#Welcomepic.twitter.com/MQRx3P9AqK— STVV (@stvv) August 13, 2019And Derek Jeter’s shattered ankle was a very different injury than the one Bryant endured. But you don’t have to be an orthopedic surgeon to draw some parallels.

Jeter fractured his ankle in October 2012, in Game 1 of the ALCS. He spent the offseason healing and rehabbing instead of conditioning. Nobody can know for sure the cause and effect, but the reality is that Jeter, at age 39, was never himself in a season that he described as “a nightmare.” He was slowed by quad and calf injuries, and eventually sidelined for good after only 17 games due to an injury to that surgically repaired ankle.

Kobe Bryant is not Derek Jeter. Their injuries are different, their sports are different, and they’re not the same age. But what they have in common — a rare interruption in their usual offseason training routine to rehabilitate an injury — is enough to drive home the point.

The biggest question about Kobe Bryant isn’t his Achilles’ tendon. It’s everything else.

I’ve made the “the horses drown”  joke like 700 times. I’m out. Apparently this is one of the most difficult sports in terms of conditioning. So I’d like to see Eddy Curry do it.

4:00 p.m.: U.S. women vs. U.S. women, NBCOlympics.com, 8 p.m. (tape-delay) NBC

May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings go for their third straight gold medal, an unbelievable run. They face fellow Americans Ross and Kessy in a shocker of a final that guarantees American gold. Win-win for U.S. fans but after Rosee-Kessy’s revenge over Brazil, this is icing on the cake. Don’t expect a letdown in intensity from either side, though.

Australia has some sneakiness to them and Team USA needs to watch out. They stunned Group winner Russia in their final game of group play and even with the lowered importance of that match, it still shows what they can do behind San Antonio Spur Patty Mills. Don’t be surprised if Australia’s hanging in there at the half, as most teams have been able to stay in range with Team USA. But that third quarter is when this one’s likely over. The big key will be whether Team USA shows an increased level of focus in this Final round.
