Kobe Bryant settles out of court in 2005 lawsuit with Grizzlies fan

(Getty Images

Kobe is used to settling things on the court. On Friday, he decided to settle something outside of a different kind of court.

It’s pretty well understood that if you sit courtside at an game, you’re kind of putting yourself in a position for potential danger. With giant men running around just feet away from you, there’s a chance you can go from spectator to involved, very quickly.

Grizzlies fan Bill Geeslin found this out the hard way in a 2005 game between the and Grizzlies.

was hustling after a loose ball in ‘ 85-73 win over the Lakers. He lunged for it and tumbled into the courtside seats. Geeslin, an insurance agent from Arkansas, came away from the exchange with a bruised lung cavity. And decided to take legal action against Bryant because of it. l:

“I recall a fast-paced incident seeing him come to me, running into me and then forearming me,” Geeslin said in a 2008 deposition. “He intentionally forearmed me in the chest. He did not apologize. He walked away and pushed — he kind of pushed his arm toward me and glared at me and walked away.”

He surmised that Bryant was angry that his team was losing or that the referee called no foul on the Grizzlies.

Geeslin, then 49, died two months after his 2008 deposition, but his estate is continuing with the suit with his mother, Betty Geeslin, substituted as the plaintiff.

There is no allegation that the contact with Bryant caused his death, but Geeslin previously said he felt like “a human punching bag” and filed suit because he felt violated and that Bryant should not be able to “inject such pain.”

What happened next? Geeslin’s family decided to continue on with the suit and pursued an amount “exceeding $75,000.” The case was dismissed in 2010 as it was concluded that “no reasonable juror could conclude that the Defendant intended to harm the Plaintiff when he effectively pushed himself off of Plaintiff’s chest to get up and back in the game” and “a reasonable juror could not conclude that Defendant’s action was intended to cause Plaintiff harm.”

But naturally, it went to through the appeals process and a 6th U.S. Circuit Court decided the district federal court was right to dismiss the emotional distress part. But the lower court was told to consider the assault and battery charges. :

The western Tennessee district court ruled that fans sitting courtside assume the risk of such contact. But the three-judge appeals panel said that wouldn’t include the alleged forearm shove.

Jury selection was set to begin today. And as you might figure, Kobe didn’t want to mess with that. Obviously a completely ridiculous lawsuit, but one that capt being part of their offer for PSG star Neymar.PSG are insisting Dembele be included in Barca’s bid, but the World Cup winner is reluctant to leave. But L’Equipe says Barca are warning Dembele he faces a season in the stands if he continues to dig irried on long enough in the legal system to finally force Kobe to either give in and pay up or waste his time with a silly trial.

It makes you wonder if teams are going to consider this nonsense when it comes to courtside seats in the future. With players like barreling into the seats Arsenal have agreed to meet Lille’s price for Nicolas Pepe. The Ivory Coast striker could be in London today for a Gunners medical.Le 10 Sport says Arsenal have landed Pepe after matching Lille’s €80m asking price.Pepe has also agreed terms over a five-year deal. The two clubs were last night finalising the parpool U18 manager Barry Lewtas says the club will take another big step forward with the opening of their new training ground in Kirkby.Lewtas says the move will be hugely beneficial for him and his side as the young players coming through the systemy structure of the deal.quite routinely, it’s only a matter of time before someone puts togethr another such lawsuit claiming assault.

Lingering questions about his maturity provide the Lakers with a conundrum about his future. But for now, the franchise center is locked up.

But the Rockets paid higher than market value for positional need, after letting go in free agency and trading , and then moving . The Rockets remain in the chas for , but would have the most size of any team in the West with a Howard-Asik combination at the five en to a return to Serie A this summer. That’s according to TMW, which report AC Milan are ready to test Arsenal’s resolve with a bid for the Uruguay internationanager Sean Dyche says Danny Drinkwater will return to full training next week. The midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, suffered a badly injured ankle and facial injuries last month after he was attacked outside of a nightclub in Manchester.”We’re hopinal.Milan, however, must find buyers for several fringe players in order to comply to UEFA fspot.

Report: Lakers still want Dwight Howard but keeping options open

With the start of free agency roughly two weeksLazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha remains a target for Premier League clubs. While established at Lazio, Strakosha is unsettled in Rome and attracting interest from England.TMW says Arsenal and Newcastle United have expressed interest in the Albania international – and Lazio are prepared to sell. The Romans are seeking €40m to part with Strakosha. The Lazio No1 played 35 Serie A games last season, keeping ten clean sheets. away, the whispers about where center might be headed — and with whdi has lavished praise on winger Riyad Mahrez. The Manchester City star has been instrumental for the Algerians, as they went on to claim African Cup of Nations glory in the summer. He outshone the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at the tournamenom — are starting to flood everybody’s rumor mill. Everybody wants to talk about the possibility of Howard going home to play for the (possibly with ) or to the young and exciting to play with (and possibly Chris Paul) or even trying to find his way across the Staples Center to play with Chris Paul on the .

What few people are talking about, though, is the boring but realistic possibility of Howard staying put with the Lakers and helping them build back toward being a contender. If the Lakers are able to retain him, they reportedly will. However, if the Lakers have to lose him away to a team, they won’t just accomodate any team he wants to join.

• The Lakers have had several discussions with Howard’s representatives over the past few weeks and remain confident that they will ultimately keep him with the franchise, even as he’s made it clear he will entertain other suitors. • Yet the Lakers also, according to sources, have not completely ruled out the idea of a sign-and-trade if they come to find next month that Howard is determined to leave. Sources say they are indeed leaning against sign-and-trade scenarios because they’d rather bank the resultant cap space from Howard’s departure for the summer of 2014. But sources say they’ve adopted a keep-all-options-open approach. So they’ll at least listen to just about anything.

The second bullet point on this post is the big one. There has been this idea that the Rockets could use and as sign-and-trade bait togi is tied to Viitorul Constanta, but is expected to leave Romania this summer. And his destination is set to be Sevilla, with his father Gheorge confirming the move.”If nothing unexpected happens, Ianis will sign for Sevilla in a few days,” said Hagi convince the Lakers to deal them Howard and still give Houston the potential for cap room to sign Chris Paul away from the Clippers. The trio of Howard, Paul, and Harden almost sounds too good to be true, and that’s because it probably is. As Stein and Shelbourne report, the Lakers value cap flexibility and luxury tax savings as they keep their house in order for 2014.

• Asik is a quality defensive anchor at roughly half Howard’s price. And Lin had the greatest success of his career under Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni. But sources maintain that the Lakers’ main priority this offseason — besides re-signing Howard — is getting their financial house in order. Which is why the overriding expectation persists that L.A. will rebuff sign-and-trade proposals to simply bank the cap space for the summer of 2014 if Howard bolts.

Why maintain flexibility for cap space in 2014 when the clock is ticking on ‘s career as he tries to chase two more rings? forward and four-time MVP can opt out of his contract in 2014. The Lakers have only signed past 2014 for $9.7 million. They’ll have plenty of cap holds to take away their cap space initially, but that’s easily circumvented by renouncing the rights to certain free agents.

If the Lakers can’t have Dwight Howard, it looks like plan B could be LeBron James. That’s not a bad fallback plan. Of course, this could all be posturing through sources before free agency actually hits to gain leverage in negotiating potential sign-and-trades down the road, but it does make sense for the Lakers to believe it’s Dwight Howard or back to the drawing board.

Carmelo Anthony confident the Knicks will be better this season

Remove the fact they play in New York which comes with the weight of heavy expectations, and the had a pretty successful 2012-13 season. They won 54 games. They finished as the No. 2 seed in the East. And they won a playoff series.

None of that amounted to a championship or even an Eastern Conference finals appearance, so it wasn’t good enough since again, they’re the Knicks, but still, considering their recent past, it was a solid season.

But expects more for this campaign. r League clubs. The midfielder is deemed dispensible by new coach Marco Giampaolo and the Rossonero are ready to cash in.Sportmediaset says Kessie have been offered to English clubs, where Arsenal, West Ham and Tottenham are all keen.Milan hope to rai:

“We were the top two seed last year,’’ Anthony said. “I think nobody expected that. This year we expect to do the same thing. I actually see this team be better than last year’s team. I won’t get into all the details [why]. But we feel that. We feel we have improved as a unit.”

al-Mubarak insists there’s no doubts about manager Pep Guardiola’s commitment.Guardiola is committed to his job at the Etihad despite reports linking him with a return to Bayern Munich.Khaldoon told Sky Sports: “You know Pep has been an incredible The Knicks haven’t made wholesale changes, but have brought in a few significant players like , , rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. and . Out goes Jason Kidd, and . In terms of t his loan move to Sevilla. The switch will see Reguilon reunited with former Real coach Julen Lopetegui. On leaving Real, he told ABC, “Obviously I was a bit sad, but good things happen in football, my conscience was at least calm because I knew that comparing the additions to the losses, the Knicks probably have indeed improved.

But the Knicks had a specific identity last season. They chucked. They led the league in 3-pointers attempted and 3-pointers made, while also being one of the heaviest isolation teams in the league. Their offense was solid enough (111.1 points per 100 possessions, third overall) but in the postseason it didn’t translate. The Pacers ate up the lack of ball movement as the Knicks became stagnant.

What will really improve the Knicks is if they can reinvent their offensive identity a bit around Carmelo’s well-rounded offensive game while implementing a bit more sharing. Use Melo as a post-forward, a la LeBron, and have him distribute to the Knick shooters that way. Run more pick-and-roll with , use transition more effectively, and don’t let dominate the ball. Bargnani isn’t a great player, but his issues have mostly been as a defender and rebounder. As a pure offensive player, he has chops and can add to the Knicks off their bench as a stretch 4. Maybe with covering for him inside, he can get away with some of that other stuff.

Part of the problem the Knicks will face is that the East is as deep as its been in years. The Pacers are rising. The Bulls will bounce back with . The Nets have been extremely aggressive in adding. And then there’s the Heat.

The Knicks might be better this season. They might be a lot better. But that doesn’t really matter, though. Because the question is, are they better than the Heat? And that answer still appears to be an emphatic no.

Friday 5 with KB: Exit… Stage Dwight

In this week’s edition of the , the CBSSports.com Senior Writer talks Dwight, again, Team USA’s dominance, the ‘ spending, and Rush. Yes, Rush.

Oh, it’s going to be a circus, all right. I’m beginning to think this is a big part of the Magic’s strategy: Wait him out, let Dwight twist, and maybe at some point he’ll say “uncle” and decide to stay. Not much. In an otherwise thrilling Olympics, though, I don’t see anyone lapping the field in any other sport — and it makes me ponder the usefulness of the U.S. doing that in basketball. Also, I’m wondering what’s taking so long for the breathless columns proclaiming that Nigeria could beat the . But this is the world Team USA lives in. Humiliate Nigeria and they’re ruthless bullies. But dare they lose to Spain or Argentina on a buzzer-beater in the medal round, and they’re the world’s biggest chokers. All’s fair in the amnesty game. The Blazers wanted Roy’s contract off their cap. Roy boss Jose Mourinho believes Liverpool cannot be caught after victory over Manchester City. The Reds are now nine points clear of City.Mourinho said, “From my position I think it’s done. “Unless something dramatic happens in terms of an injury that brewanted a chance to try to play again. It’s really the best outcome for everyone involved, even if it is a little weird. Welcome to the new NBA.They’re probably going to be taxpayers for the first time in franchise history. There would be ways around it — a salary-dump at the trade deadline — but that’s the kind oeft the Chinese Premier League to sign with Argentina’s Estudiantes.Mascherano, who played fco Silva knows fans are fuming after defeat to Burnley. The Blues slumped to a fourth league defeat in a row today as Jeff Hendrick’s second-half volley sealed a 1-0 win for Burnley.Silva was angry at the decision to show Seamus Coleman a second yelloor Corinthians, West Ham and Liverpool before Barcelona for eight years and Hebei Fortune in China, was presented before 15,000 supporters on Sunday.”I want tf move a non-contender makes, not a conference title contender. The Bulls are one of the most interesting teams in terms of how their roster was affected by the new rules — not matching on and letting three solid rotation players go in , and . Best Friday 5 question ever, Matt. I’m currently getting into their new release, “Clockwork Angels,” and honestly think it’s some of the best work they’ve ever done. But if you’re a newcomer to the band, I feel like you wouldn’t have any context. Even for someone like myself who’s been listening to the band religiously since … well, never mind since when. The point is, the best advice I have for you is to experience Rush the way I did. Start with “Moving Pictures,” the first Rush album I owned, and go forward from there. If you want a faster primer, there are several live albums I’d recommend, starting with “R30,” from their 30th anniversary tour. In “Time Machine 2011, Live in ,” they play “Moving Pictures” from start to finish. As for older stuff, “Exit … Stage Left” is one of the best live rock albums ever, and I still listen to “A Show of Hands” constantly. My favorite studio album — like if I were on lockout stakeout in 2017 and could only bring one thing to listen to — is “Permanent Waves,” followed closely by “Power Windows.” Once you get a feel, go back to the earlier stuff; “Hemispheres” is probably my favorite pre-“Moving Pictures” album.
