Who’s the greatest designated hitter of all-time?

(Getty Images)

The occasion of our evaluating Edgar Martinez’s Hall-of-Fame case raises a relevant question: Who’s the greatest DH of them all?

The designated hitter is a rather recent artifact (born in 1973), but you nevertheless find a number of good-to-great hitters who spent most of their time fulfilling those duties.

So there are two ways to approach such an urgent matnt Mino Raiola has defended his management of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.Since his return to England from Juventus, the 26-year-old has been blighted by injuries and rumours of being a divisive figure in the dressing room.Speaking to Spoter. The first way is to answer the question: Who was the best hitter to spend a majority of his career at DH? If that’s the guiding query, then the discussion will be a brief one. It’s Frank Thomas (career OPS+ of 156), and it’s not a close call.

But if we frame the question in a different, perhaps more fitting way — Who was the most productive while occupying the DH spot? — then things get more interesting. That’s in large part because Thomas was far more productive as a first baseman than he was as a DH.

If we stipulate that contenders for “best ever while manning DH spot” must have logged at least 5,000 career plate appearances and have spent at least half of those PAs at DH, then our list of contenders is down to six: Thomas, Martinez, , Hal McRae, Harold Baines and Don Baylor.

Let’s compare some numbers, shall we? Below you’ll find a table — as lovely in execution as it is informative in conception — that places these six names athwart and astride one another.

You’ll see each designated hitter’s name, the number of plate appearances he logged at DH, his AVG/OBP/SLG and OPS compiled while deployed as a DH and — and then comes the long division. Actually, it’s pretty simple. Under the heading “OPS/Avg. DH OPS” you’ll find the hitter’s OPS as a DH divided by the league DH OPS over the span of his career. Ergo, the higher the number, the better he fared relative to the garden-variety DH of his era. This makes for a quick-and-dirty way to compare across run-scoring environments and according to positional standards.

To the digits …

Who is the greatest DH?PlayerPA as DHAVG/OBP/SLGOPS as DHOPS/Avg. DH OPS

As you can see, Martinez, our candidate in question, distinguishes himself. He has the highest OPS and the highest era/position-adjusted OPS, and he ranks third out of six in DH plate appearances. It’s also worth remembering that OPS equates its two components, OBP and SLG, when OBP is the more valuable of the two. Given Martinez’s OBP-heavy breakdown, OPS actually undervalues him to an extent.

Park effects? Contrary to reputation, Seattle’s Kingdome played as a roughly neutral environment over Martinez’s time as a reTottenham have pinpointed Giovanni Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele as their primary transfer targets. Both players have impressed manager Mauricio Pochettino this season. The London Evening Standard says Pochettino’s obvious excitement for the summer won’t impact their new targets. Both clubs are widely touted as top talents.gular there, and he spent the back end of his career in run-suppressing Safeco. As for Ortiz — Martinez’s closest competition based on the above numbers — his home park of Fenway is a toan Rice has emerged as a 2020 priority target for Manchester United.Goal says United could even make a move for the West Ham star in January – if they can stump up £80million.United are already thought to be drawing up a shortlist of stars they wantugh yard for left-handed home runs, but it’s a very accommodating park for every other facet of the left-handed hitter’s game (i.e., singles, doubles and triples). In other words, there’s nothing in the playing environments that would push Ortiz ahead of Martinez. That’s to say nothing of the fact that Baseball-Reference and FanGraphs each rate Martinez as the better base-runner of the two.

Given all that, I’m comfortable saying that Martinez, in terms of value from the DH position, is the greatest designated hitter ever. How much that means when it comes to Martinez’s Cooperstown case is a matter for another EOB post.

Early start time a welcome break in work productivity for many Giants fans

“I left at 11 [a.m.], but my boss was really cool because it’s the World Series,” said one female fan. She wasn’t alone. Over half the fans I surveyed took a half-day. Some waited until 2 or 3 p.m. local time before skating.

Others just used up a few vacation days.

Reds ‘cautiously optimistic’ Johnny Cueto could return in NLDS

CINCINNATI — Reds starter  was feeling better on Monday, general manager Walt Jocketty said, but the team still is unsure when he’ll pitch again or who would be the Game 4 starter in the National League Division Series against the Giants, if necessary.

That “if necessary” phrase looms large, as the Reds hold a 2-0 lead heading into Tuesday’s Game 3 at Great American Ball Park. Since the advent of the wild card, no National League team has lost a division series after winning the first two games in the best-of-5 series.

Cueto, the team’s Game 1 starter, left his start on Satof the club.Drogba knows Lampard is working with one hand tied behind his back due to the club’s transfer ban.”I think he is a very good coach, but this year it is a little more difficult because he does not have many options because of the penaltiesurday after just eight pitches because of back spasms. Before the Reds defeated the Giants 9-0 behind on Sunday, Cueto and Bailey flew back to Cincinnati so they could sleep at home instead of taking the overnight flight from  with the rest of the team.

Cueto was unavailable for comment after Monday’s optional workout at Great American Ball Park, but he was in the clubhouse and seemingly had little trouble moving around.

“He was much better [Monday], and so we just have to wait to see how it is in another day or so,” Jocketty said.

Jocketty said the team was “cautiously optimistic” he could pitch again in the series. Manager Dusty Baker had not yet spoken to Cueto or the team’s trainers when he addressed the media.

Bailey said he and Cueto were able to watch the first two innings of Sunday’s game on the flight from San Francisco before landing. From there, he returned to his Cincinnati home and watched the rest of the game from the comfort of his couch. Although strange to be away from the team, he noted it was nice to be able to watch from home and then go right to sleep.

“I didn’t land at 7 a.m.; I was still sleeping,” Bailey said. “So [Monday] I woke up back on regular time and I have one more whole day to kinda get back into it.”

The Giants have yet to announce their Game 4 starter either, and could go with either or Game 1 starter . starts for San Francisco on Wednesday.

Braves’ arms are better, fresher this September

(Gility to play attractive football as Arsenal manager.Speaking to Goal on Monday night, Wenger has some words to say about the current Arsenal side and Emery.“I’m not here to judge coaches, I am a supporter of Arsenal Football Club so I just supportetty Images)

Many factors contributed to the ‘ great demise in 2011, but among them was the overuse of the back-end of the bullpen throughout the season by manager Fredi Gonzalez. The starting rotation wore down in September as well.

This time around, things couldn’t be more different.

The 2011 Braves were 9-18 with a 4.17 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in September. All three stats were the worst for a month in the entire season. The rotation faltered, especially 38-year-old Derek Lowe (0-5, 8.75), but the once-mighty bullpen had a rough month due to overuse.

Prior to Sept. 8, 2011, was 43 of 48 on save chances with a 1.55 ERA. The rest of the way he’d blown three saves while only closing down three with a 4.76 ERA.

started his decline earlier than Kimbrel in ’11. Through Aug. 22, he had a 1.10 ERA with five saves, 27 holds and only two blown leads. The rest of the way, Venters blew two more leads and had a 5.65 ERA.

The bullpen workload for the big three of Kimbrel, Venters and was staggering. All three were in the top five for relief appearances in the National League. Those three along with formed four of the top 15 in innings pitched among relievers in the NL. That is four individual relief pitchers with more than 73 innings pitched.

This time around, Gonzalez has had more options and also consciously — he told reporters in the spring he’d take it easy on Kimbrel and Venters — dialed it back. Through Tuesday night’s victory, Kimbrel has 59 1/3 innings pitched. O’Flaherty has 55 1/3 as the eighth-inning guy. Venters struggled early in the season but sports a 2.01 ERA since the All-Star break and has only racked up 54 2/3 innings on the season. Martinez has worked 71 1/3, but that’s only one guy.

It doesn’t hurt that the decrepit Lowe is gone and instead young — who is fresh after having started the season in the bullpen — has developed into an ace.

And here Unai Emery. The Independent says there will be no movement on Emery until the end of the season. But it is likely that they will not take the option to extend Emery’s contract with the Spaniard having a break clause in his deal at the end of the seaswe are, the Braves are 15-7 with a 2.71 ERA and 1.06 WHIP this month. In complete contrast to last season, that’s the best ERA and WHIP the staff hasiendly with St. Patrick’s Athletic.Lampard kicked off his rein as Blues boss with a 1-1 draw with Bohemians on Wednesday night.David Luiz, Olivier Giroud, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic all missed the match, but Lampard says they could posted in a month all year.

Then again, lots of things are different in this time around. That’s why the Braves are celebrating a postseason berth with eight games left.

Nightly Grades: Toronto clinches playoff berth

Each night, Eye on Basketball brings you what you need to know about the games of the NBA. From great performances to terrible clock management the report card evaluates and eviscerates the good, the bad, and the ugly from the night that was.

One of those games where you really see how far has come as a player. He was patient, he was deliberate, he attacked without forcing things, he picked the ‘ usually stingy defense apart.

If you wonder why some writers are so excited about the idea of John Wall in the payoffs, it’s games like this one.

So… maybe things haven’t completely turned around with that one win.

They were out of sorts from the get-go. They just seemed a step slow at every moment, on every possession. Pick and roll, in the post, off the cut, everything. The were one step ahead of them. They may be tired from the season, but the season’s not over. They’ve got some tough games left on the schedule. If they want the top seed, they can’t come out flat like that.

needs to go on journey to the center of the Earth to find his shot.

Went down early, climbed back, went down late, pulled it out. The ‘ season in a nutshell, and the end result?

The Raptors are back in the playoffs. Believe.

Julius Randle looks like a good pro, right?

Another great late-season win for Orlando, fighting back from a huge deficit to takeManchester United interest in Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez is firming.Clarin says United will face competition from Barcelona for Martinez.United have identified Martinez as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who left for Inter in the summer. But it’s claimed Barcelona are also keen on the Argentine forward. Martinez’s deal with Inter carries an €111m buyout clause. it to overtime. continues to be an incredible weapon that grows game by game.

hit a huge shot to force overtime, but it was who got them in position for it. He nailed a series of shots in the post and from mid-range that were money. Smart shots in the offense, and overpowered Charlotte.

Really great win for a team showing a lot of life headed into next year.

This didn’t kill their shot at the with Fulham.Fulham’s top scorer last season has revealed that he turned down a move in China to stay at Craven Cottage with Fulham next season. As well as ignoring the attention from China, he has committed his long-term future to the Championship cl No. 6 seed (now 2.5 back of Washington) but it did put dent in it. They need wins against the soft part of the schedule. Even as far as clinching a playoff spot, this was a big one.

They had some good chances to close it out, but their defense of stretch fours remains problematic. It’s something they probably want to work on since they’re going to be facing and for four games or so.

Detroit’s sad, but you have to credit a team that was without Wade, Allen, Chalmers, and Oden. was clinically dead a month ago and all of a sudden is making huge plays and scoring for them. They just always have guys ready to come in an contribute.

Did I mention the are bad?

Burn this team to the ground and erase their stats from the internet. They’re not the worst team in the league, it just feels like it a lot of nights. No one’s chemistry is worse.

They had a lot of trouble in the post. The just kind of bludgeoned them to death with patience, precision and eve distributoin. Their scoring effort was pretty decent, but the Nets just blasted their inside-out defense.

You have to love their patience. The experience can be old someimes, it can be slow, but it can also be patient, deliberate, and controlled. They don’t let things get out of hand and they dictate pass extremely well.

and Joe Jonson went 7-of-9 from three.

Corey Morrow can shoot, and can pass. That was pretty much all they needed. 22-5-15-3 for Evans. They even lost to an ankle injury and it didn’t matter. Some great ball of late from a team with nothing to play for. Good sign for the future.

The losing this game was like a bologna sandwich. Nothing special. Not terrible. Not great. Just bologna.

didn’t play well and they won by 31.

Belinelli and Duncan combinwill be hard to forget. Many were uncertain about the impact Maddison could make in his first term in the Premier League. However, he rose to the occasion and became one of the most creative players in the team, filling the void left by Riyad Mahrez.Aed to shoot 19-for-30 from the field.

If you see the in your neighborhood, run, do not walk indoors and call the authorities. Go to a safe place in your home with load-bearing walls and wait for help to arrive.

Denver just has too many injuries to do anything, and San Antonio’s execution is exactly the kind of team that kills them. And by that, I mean a good one.

This is what makes them so infuriating. Passing, defense, movement, effort, interior toughness, and playmaking. They put it all together. Why couldn’t have done this just a few more times? I get that the Lakres are awful but the Wolves can play like this more. That they didn’t this season remains a painful disappointment.

We need to invent a time machine, go back, and make sure this team never plays a single game. Have them forfeit every game. Think of the children.

I mean, what did you think was gonna happen here?

No, I mean seriously, what did you think was gonna happen here?

It’s a nightmare matchup for them to begin with, and they lost Andrew Bogut to a hip injury after David Lee was already out.

Which makes their win all the better.

It comes down to this.

Steph Curry can hit shots which no one else can, and when Draymond Green, a 30 percent shooter from deep this year is knocking down perimeter shots, there’s not much you can do. The Warriors didn’t play well, were injured and outmatched, and won. This is why they remain so dangerous for the playoffs.

They again couldn’t find quality open looks late in a game, and when Zach Randolph missed a few he should have made late and Mike Conley missed a few he should make, and then Curry is hitting everything, they were screwed.

It’s a bad loss, but sometimes, the bad losses happen to you instead of coming as a result of what you did. The Warriors made shots in the final five, often low-percentage shots. In a playoff series, you have to try and prevent those shots as part of your strategic adjustment. Not in a regular season game.

Bad loss, tough loss, not an unforgiveable one.

Been talking about this for two weeks, but I’ll say it again. When Phoenix is in its groove, everything comes insanely easy for them. They just flow into shots, the ball finds open looks, they tip in everything and that fuels their defensive energy.

Goran Dragic was everywhere and where he wasn’t, Eric Bledsoe was. They pushed the pace and figured out in the first ten minutes that New York didn’t want to run.

That’s when the game was over.

At one point, Bledsoe ran right past Tyson Chandler at the free throw line in transition, J.R. Smith was too slow to react and Bledsoe got right to the rim. But that’s OK, though, because he missed the layup with two Knicks right there to rebound.

Goran Dragic, I say again, Goran Dragic crashed the glass for the putback.

The Knicks!
