Chipper Jones on the one-game playoff: ‘It’s stupid’

content_img

(AP)

As we get closer to the end of the season, we’re going to hear more and more about the new playoff format. I happen to like its biggest (and intended) result, division titles mean something with those teams avoidng the one-game playoff. The Braves’ , though, disagrees.

“I think it’s stupid, to be honest with you,” Jones told reporters in on Friday (). “But Major League Baseball wants a bunch of teams in the playoffs. There’s nothing like cut-throat baseball for the fans. And people love that 163rd regular-season game. They’ve loved it in the past. I’m sure that’s probably what’s promoted a second wild-card team. I wish tp has revealed he played a hand in Frank Lampard becoming manager of Derby County. The 41-year-old impressed enough in his debut season at Pride Park to be named as Maurizio Sarri’s successor at Chelsea. And Redknapp says he advised Rams owner Mel Morrhey would’ve done it a year earlier so we would have had a chance last year.”

If I’m Jones and the Braves, I’m probably not sold on the idea of the one-game wild card, either. Atlanta entered Friday’s game with a 6 1/2-game lead over the for the top wild card slot, and 8 1/2 games ahead of for the second. The team is also 5 1/2 games behind the in the NL East, so it seems like the Braves are a shoo-in for at least one of the wild card spots.

“You say to yourself, we could possibly have the second- or third-best record in the National League when the season’s over and we have to play a one-game playoff just to get in,” Jones continued (). “That doesn’t seem fair because anything can happen [in one game]. Now if you were to say the two wild-card teams will play a best two-out-of-three [series], I’d be OK with that. I think it’s more fair from a standpoint that anything can happen in one game — a blown call by an umpire, a bad day at the office … at least in a two-of-three game series you have some sort of leeway.”

Again, I understand where he’s coming from and in his seat, I’d likely feel the same. But if you’re talking about castle United. The Portos-Conceicao-vacant-managers-job.html”>Daily MailPortos-Conceicao-vacant-managers-job.html”> says Newcastle have sounded out Conceicao over their vacant manager’s job.Newcastle are on the hunt for a successor for Rafa Benitez affair, is it fair for a team that won its division to sit around for three-to-six days before starting its postseason series?

Whatever anyone at this point says, it’s not going to change anything this year and unlikely to change anythinglsea defender Marcos Alonso has cast doubt on his future today.Alonso signed a new five-year contract only last October, but has struggled for form under coach Maurizio Sarri and reports in Spain have linked him with a return to Real Madrid. When aske down the line. Will it work out as expected? It rarely does, but that’s one of the beauties of baseball.

Wright suggests he badly wants to stay a Met, and now it’s time for the Wilpons to repay him

content_img

(US Presswire)

MIAMI – In just another month, another Mets season featuring the usual few months of hope followed by a sad second-half downturn will mercifully end. And then begins the real important time for the Mets’ future, specifically the small window for them to reach a long-term deal with , the beloved homegrown star who a high-ranking Mets person once called “our Jeter.’’

Wright told the Mets he didn’t want to negotiate during this season, at least delaying their hope to make him a Met for life, and he said in an interview this weekend that that goes for next season, as well. That leaves this winter as the time to get it done.

Based on the surprisingly flattering words he had about the second-division-dwelling Mets, it’s up to the team. There are no excuses.

The verbiage and feeling all still point to this getting done. And, as , a noted expert in this very situation, opined regarding Wright, “I hope they keep him. He’s the face of the franchise.’’

For that very reason (and a few others), it’s hard to see Wright – who’s having a typical year with 17 home runs, 78 RBI and a .317 batting average — leaving. Reyes, who signed for $106 million for six years with the rival , you Manolas.De Laurentiis says he is ready to buy the Greece defender – but for less than Roma’s current price. He said, “We’ve been working on Manolas since Albiol announced his desire to leave Naples. He has given us a lot, but is of a certain age. Wecould easily see going.

Some Mets officials privately wondered whether Reyes could stay healthy. About Wright you never hear a peep that could be construed as negative, not since New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin caught Mets owner Fred Wilpon in a weak moment at a time when he was wondering whether the Madoff scandal might take his beloved team and contested the widely-held belief that Wright is a “superstar.’’

Even from Wright, who may be more media savvy than the Mets’ longtime owner, you hear only positive (and you know he’s seen it all with the Mets, not all of it good). Speaking of his chances to remain a Met long-term, Wright doesn’t even give a nod to the negotiating thing most of them do.

“I’m extremely optimistic,’’ he said. “I’ve really enjoyed it here.’’

Time for the Wilpons to show how much they’ve enjoyed having him here, for showing the guts to play soon after suffering a serious concussion (he wanted not to miss a day before being convinced to go on the disabled list), for showing the fortitude to play through a broken back last year (he should have been told to rest), for enduring the stark pitchers’ park they built (the team finally fixed that last winter) and for keeping a positive attitude even when things are falling apart around him.

Time for the Wilpons to pony up. The figure of $160 million for eight years would be a nice start (my suggestion, not Wrights; he’s too polite to talk about loot).

The annual losing, of course, bothers Wright. But apparently not enough to break him.

In the face of a fourth straight losing season, he also remains optimistic about the team’s long-term chances, saying, “Although we haven’t gotten things completely turned around, we’ve taken small steps in the right direction and have something to build on.’’

Of course, no signing is guaranteed for an organization whose biggest single player expenditure in the last two years was for offbeat middling closer , who signed for $12 million over two years, an organization that’s cut its player payroll from $140 million to $95 million, an organization whose greatest non-Madoff regret was giving $66 million for four years to . The Franciscsk that boss Jurgen Klopp faces at the club. With the Reds winning the Champions League and going within an inch of the Premier League title last season, expectations are at an all time high. And Krawietz knows that setting even higher standards with to contract will be topped when the Mets pick up Wright’s $16-million option for 2013, but that never was in question. The question is if it ends there.

There have been some media suggestions the Mets should consider passing on their one longtime star, look to deal their one tradable high-priced veteran and get on with a rebuild. However, the Wilpons don’t believe they can embrace such a long-term stance in New York and sources continue to say they intend to try to sign Wright long-term instead. Rival execs suggest Wright is likely a $20-million player, and yet Mets ownership, aware of this probability, seems undeterred.

What’s more, Wright’s interest in staying seems just as great as the team’s in keeping him. None of the negativity seems to have swayed Wright, not the string of second-half collapses, not the severely reduced payroll, not even the misguided Fred Wilpon remark.

“I like to think I’m a loyal person,’’ Wright said.

Just how loyal is Wright? Well, for one, Wright said he is sticking with his embattled agents, the Levinson brothers, who are being investigated by and the players union for representation of Melky Cabrera and possible ties to Kirk Radomski.)

But more to the point, after nine years as a Met, now a majority suffered in the second division (barring a huge finish, this will be the fifth year out of nine with a losing record), he couldn’t summon one bad word about the Metropolitans.

“There’s not a single complaint that I have,’’ Wright said. “(The Mets) drafted me as a kid. They developed me. They’ve given me an opportunity to make a living playing a game. There’s a tremendous amount of mutual respect. They’ve gone above and beyond.’’

That doesn’t sound like a man on the way out, now does it?

Perhaps taking a lesson from Jeter eight miles away, Wright has expertly guided the minefields of New York, and that includes his handling of the negotiations so far. Wright short-circuited the Mets’ intentions to try to negotiate an extension during this season, saying lder admits he took a conscious decision at the beginning of the season to maintain their attacking approach.Wilder was speaking after watching a five match unbeaten run lift his team to fifth, only seven months after being promoted from the Championhe didn’t want to be distracted while recalling how distracted he was when he agreed to his $68-million extension early in the 2006 season. Wright still maintains he did it to eliminate the distraction, but a side benefit has been to see the baseline likely go from friend and fellow Virginian Ryan Zimmerman’s $100-million, six-year deal to $140 million for seven.

Eight years for $160 million would seem like a reasonable bid for Wright, though if he desires more years it’s hard to see how they pass now. They need credibility, their anchor, their Jeter.

They also can’t afford to give up the RBI. Their greatest need going into 2013 is more power, not less.

Rather than swallow him up, New York has been a plus for Wright. By all accounts, he loved his eight-year tenure, living in Manhattan while taking advantages of the pluses it offers. But at his heart, he is a ballplayer who knows history.

Wanting to stay a Met is about loyalty. And it’s a bit about legacy, too.

Wright grew up in southern Virginia, not far from where the Mets Triple-A team was stationed for years in Tidewater/Norfolk. But the real influence was three and a half hours away, where he saw his first major-league game as a kid, sitting in the cheap seats at the then-brand-new Camden Yards.

“My favorite player was Cal Ripken,’’ Wright said. ‘”The biggest reason for that was, I like that he stayed.’’

Hard to see Wright going. And easy to see him giving the Mets every chance.

Wright is, of course, too polite to talk about dollars, or even years.

But he did say about the coming contract, “You’d like it to take you to the end of your career.’’

Based on his words, it’s hard to imagine his career ends anywhere else. The smart money he stays the king of Queens, and yes, the face of the franchise.

MLB should send message, suspend Nyjer Morgan for contact with fan

content_img

Just before the recorded the final out in their victory over the Wednesday, drifted up against the right-field stands in Cincinnati, in an attempt to haul in a foul ball. What happened after that would garner a suspension, if I were in charge of such things.

Here’s the video, courtesy of .com:

Fox Sports Cincinnati showed a camera angle more from the center of the field, and it was very clear that Morgan slapped the fan in the face with his glove intentionally. For anyone who saw that replay, there is no arguing this point thinks Arsenal have a good player in Pablo Mari. The Spaniard, on loan from Flamengo, made his debut for the Gunners in Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round win over Portsmouth. And Arteta was impressed with his performance when speaking after the game.”I thin. I’ll reiterate: Morgan hit a fan in the face on purpose.

Now, if the fan was reaching over into the field or he struck Morgan first, I’d have no problem with a reaction. In this case, however, Morgan was reaching over the rail into the stands. The field is the players’ domain, but Morgan was clearly reaching over into the domain of the fans. The fan in question did absolutely nothing but raise his hands toward the ball. And for that, he gets struck in the face and a “get back!” from Morgan. I don’t care for the childish posturing afterward from Morgan either, but that’s harmless.

Now, in and of itself, the physical contact from Morgan could be spun as relatively harmless. The fan did not appear harmed physically and a slap of the glove is not nearly as severe as, say, a punch with a closed fist. But that’s not what this is about. Players cannot be allowed to strike the fans in any shape or form. The fans are the lifeblood of Major League Baseball. The players are only paid because fans pay to watch them play, whether by buying a ticket or by subscribing to television channels that air the games.

If Morgan is suspended, Major League Baseball sends a message to its players that physically contacting fans — especially those who have done nothing wrong — will not be tolerated.

If a fan reaches out onto the field and strikes a player, he faces ejection from the ballpark, an arrest and probably a lifetime ban from the ballpark. This has to be a two-way street. Nyjer Morgan crossed into the domain of the fan and struck a fan unjustifiably.Aston Villa have signed Wolves defender Kortney Hause on a permanent deal. The 23-year-old impressed on loan at Villa Park last season. He becomes boss Dean Smith’s fourth signing of the summer window to date, with Villa having already sealed sCorriere della Sera says the Serie A side are preparing to ramp of their pursuit of the Belgian. The Nerazzurri have been trying to convince the Red Devils to let the striker go all summer but are yet to meet their asking price. But they face a challemoves for Jota, Anwar El Ghazi and Wesley Moraes.Hause’s move brings to an end a five-and-a-half year stay at Molineux for the defender.

NBA announces slate for 2014 Basketball Without Borders events

content_img

While the ugliness of the Donald Sterling saga drags on and further gives the NBA an embarrassing headache it’s trying to rid itself of, the NBA announced on Tuesday the slate of one of its more encouraging community outreach programs in Basketball Without Borders.

The program that provides camps for kids across the globe and expands the ‘s presence internationally will feature events in Rome, Tapei, and will return to Johannesburg, South Africa for the 11th year.

From the NBA:

Basketball without Borders, the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development program, has reached 1,700 campers from more than 120 countries, with 28 BWB campers drafted into the NBA.BWB Europe will tip off the summer schedule from June 2 – 5 in Rome. Highlighting the camp will be three current Italian NBA players and former BWB campers: Danilo Gallinari (BWB 2003, Denver Nuggets), Andrea Bargnani (BWB 2003, New York Knicks), and Italian national team captain Gigi Datome (BWB 2003, Detroit Pistons). In addition, Brandon Knight (Milwaukee Bucks) and Al Horford (Atlanta Hawks) will also participate. BWB Europe 2014 will bring together the top 50 players born in 1997 from more than 25 European countries. The camp was held previously in Treviso, Italy in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.BWB Asia will tip off in Taipei from June 13 – 16. John Salmons (Toronto Raptors), Ronny Turiaf (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Cody Zeller (Charlotte Bobcats) will participate. Eight-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming will make a one-day appearance. BWB Africa 2014 will bring together the top 60 African png bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday.”We’re excited for it,” Potter said. “I must admit I enjoyed the atmosphere at Selhurst Park, which was my first experience of it.”We want to try and win of course but I’m sure Palace will have the same tholayers born in 1997 or 1998 from more than 20 African countries.“Basketball without Borders helped me become the player and man I am today, both on and off the court,” said Gallinari. “Learning basketball and life skills from NBA players and coaches is a special opportunity that I greatly appreciated in 2003, and that I know this year’s campers will greatly appreciate. I look forward to bringing the amazing BWB program back to Italy with some of my fellow countrymen, and to coaching some of the most talented teenagers in Europe. I can’t wait to get started.”Through NBA Cares, the league’s global social responsibility program, all three camps will include extensive community oendan Rodgers praised Papy Mendy after victory at West Ham.The midfielder impressed on a rare outing for the Foxes on Saturday.Rodgers said, “Obviously, some of the players have been playing some games.”Over the course of the last four weeks, we’ve tutreach efforts led by NBA players and coaches. Through grassroots basketball development, community service, and life skill seminars, BWB will focus on teaching the values of the game, including leadership, respect, character and health and wellness. In addition, donations of school supplies, clothing, books, games, basketball equipment and other necessities will be made to local community-based organizations.Nike, a BWB global partner since 2002, will again outfit thts about leaving Chelsea last year. The midfielder is enjoying career best form this season.”I came to Chelsea at the age of 12, as their scouts spotted me in a small Marseille club,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport magazine SportWeek.“It was very he campers and coaches of all three camps with Nike apparel and footwear.Since its inception, the NBA and FIBA have staged 36 BWB camps in 21 cities across 18 countries on five continents. More than 150 different current and former NBA/WNBA players have joined nearly 140 NBA team personnel from all 30 NBA teams.

It’s important to note these efforts even as the Sterling saga unfolds. This program is one of the best things the NBA does not only for fans of the game across the world, but for its players. The embassadors involved typically return having undergone personal growth and often speak of their experiences as life changing. The coaches involved in the Johannesburg trip should make that a particularly notable event.

But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond.“Everyone in this franchise owes a great deal of gratitude to what Mike and his staff have done. We wish him the best.” In parts of three seasons with the Knicks, Woodson compiled an overall record of 109-79 (.580) that included two consecutive NBA Playoff appearances and an Atlantic Division title – the team’s first in 19 years. On Mar. 19, 2014, he became just the seventh coach in franchise history to reach the century mark in victories. Initially named Knicks interim head coach with 24 games remaining in the 2011-12 season, Woodson completed his ninth season at the helm of an NBA franchise, posting a record of 315-365.The search for a new coaching staff will begin immediately.

Savvy Mavericks remind Thunder of their playoff identity

The race for the eighth seed in the Western Conference is beginning to resemble one of those movies where the hero/villain keeps coming back at the very last minute, only there are three heroes/villains who all are unkillable. On Tuesday, the entered their game vs. the Thunder out of the playoff picture, with the Suns having snuck into the eighth spot ahead of them. They were facing the Thunder, who have been a major problem for Dallas since the Mavs took out OKC in the 2011 Western Conference finals.

And then Dallas, with all their defensive issues, found a way to get back into control of their own destiny.

It was a game that defines the late-season NBA, at least the one that isn’t tanking. Huge shots, over and over again, as and matched daggers.

Dallas’ best hope for a playoff run lies with Nowitzki, obviously. But against the Thunder they showed another weapon. It’s easy to forget in the regular season with the athleticism, but the Mavericks are stocked with veterans. , , , , they’re all experienced players, and while Calderon and Ellis have never been part of deep playoff runs, they know how to execute.

Dallas is never going to win games with their defense, but what gave them the edge vs. OKC was the ability to settle into a veteran groove and execute while Oklahoma City got ahead of itselling offer to Chelsea for youngster Tariq Lamptey. The 19-year-old is out of contract in the summer, meaning it is the last chance for the Blues to cash in.And Brighton are willing to payir Todibo says he’s a better player for his time with Schalke. The French youngster is on-loan at Schalke.”I feel really good. I adapted very well to the team and I feel great. The only thing we lack at the moment are the victories: we are in a somewh £6 million for the talented youngster, per the Chelsea-academyf and tripped on its own youth. Whether this is reflective of OKC’s actual identity is to be decided in the playoffs, but on the surface, it does give life to Dallas’ hopes for an unlikely Cinderella push.

And if nothing else, it showcases why Dallas has been so hard to kick out of their perch at the end of the Western standings. Even with Phoenix the “it” team for so many months and the Grizzlies having been chasing them down like a rogue Mack truck, Dallas has stayed one step ahead. Every time they’ve fallen out of the playoffs, they’ve burst back in. Getting wins late in the season against better teams takes away one more opportunity for Memphis or Phoenix to capitalize. And it gives the Mavericks confidence.

There are some teams that play without that confidence, that seem to be playing well because they are without believing they can. Dallas instead is made up of self-belief. From its owner who constructed this team and said it could comWenger has revealed Arsenal made an attempt to sign Lionel Messi as a Barcelona youth teamer.Wenger discussed the move when asked about Arsenal’s failed attempt for current Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo. When asked on beIN SPORTS if Arsenal were verpete despite shortcomings to the roster full of bitter veterans who hate the disrespect of doubt, Dallas has a firm sense of its own identity, even if their defense so often compromises it.

Through all of it stand two figures who have been there the longest, the keys to that 2011 run (along with Shawn Marion): Rick Carlisle and Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki, who some thought might have hit the end of his time as an impact player last year, and Carlisle, tasked with turning a team of traffic cones into a team capable of playoff basketball have put together another remarkable season. Having veterans helps the cause, but few are better than Carlisle at tactical adjustments and weathering storms.

Maybe Tuesday was just you typical regular-season flash, but it also provided the Thunder with a reminder of what beat them in 2011, the Mavericks’ know-how and conviction. And there’s a good chance that a month from now, the two teams could meet for the rubber match of playoff faceoffs. There are no easy Western Conference matchups, but the idea of seeing Dirk for seven games has to give OKC a little pause, just as the idea of dealing with fully actualized Durant has to keep the Mavericks up nights.

Welcome to the Western Conference, once again stacked with the heroes and villains who just never seem to die.
