Heat could use a boost from their balanced point guard position

MIAMI — The have a very different situation at the point guard position than just about any other team. On most teams, the point guard is the initiator of the offense and someone who organizes the lineup on the floor of where they need to be. With the Heat, they don’t often ask to be that kind of leader. Erik Spoelstra wants his point guards to be aggressive and be willing to take quality shots, but you’re not going to see them often racking up double-digit assist games.

Playing well and playing consistently for guys like Chalmers and is the key. They have to be playmakers when the opportunity is there, but aggressive play on both ends of the floor is the desired game plan. Through the first two games of the Finals, neither point guard has been able to give a consistent performance for Miami.

In Game 1 against the , Chalmers was in early foul trouble and only ended up playing 17 minutes on the night. It was Cole who picked up the majority of the time at the position, contributing five assists in 31 minutes but not being a factor in scoring the ball. Game 2 opa League in its old European Cup Winners’ Cup guise in 1998 — the same year he won the League Cup, the Super Cup and, of course, the World Cup — is adamant he’d rather be in it to win it every year than making up the numbers in the continent’s saw a reversal of fortunes for both players. Chalmers was much more controlled and did a solid defensive job on the Spurs’ perimeter players, while Cole barely had an impact in 10 minutes.

“I thought Rio gave us a lift the other night,” Erik Spoelstra said at shootaround on Tuesday. “As long as he can play in his normal wheelhouse of minutes, he gives us something different — another guy who can put the ball on the floor and make plays, space the floor for us, and another defender on Parker. It was the other way around in Game 1. Norris played the big minutes and Rio played those minutes. Ideally, we’d get both of them playing their normal minutes.”

Neither Chalmers nor Cole have ever been shy about accepting the gravity of the moment and looking to contribute. Chalmers has hit numerous huge shots for the Heat over the years while taking the brunt of on-court criticism from his teammates if he makes a mistake. They yell at him because they know he can handle that kind of relationship. Cole has been.City assistant manager Arteta is in advanced talks to take the manager’s job at Arsenal this week. And should Arteta leave the champions, former Feyenoord coach Van Bronckhorst is available to step in to fill the void. The Dutchman is now part of the a spark plug, who did a fantastic job bothering during this year’s Eastern Conference finals.

The Heat need both players to settle back into their roles and excel in them. With and handling so much of the ball, it limits the opportunities the Heat’s point guards have in impacting the game on their own. They’re reliant on cuts off the ball, the defense being out of position when they receive a pass, and finding ways to knock down big shots. And of course, figuring out a way to stay in front of the Spurs’ backcourt of and can be quite the task.

Heading into Game 3 in Miami Tuesday night, Chalmers stepping up early could take a lot of pressure off of the position for the Heat and give the Spurs another weapon to worry about defending.

“Definitely not comfortable,” Chalmers said when asked if he was comfortable with the way he had played so far. “I want to provide as much as I can. Tonight, the game plan for me is to come out and be more aggressive early, just try to see where I can attack more, and just see where I can be more aggressive at on the court.”

Through two games, Chalmers and Cole have combined for 10 points on 13 shots (30.7 percent from the field), 11 assists, nine turnovers, and 13 fouls. If both p for Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech.De Telegraaf reports Chelsea have an oral agreement in place with the Eredivisie side and the deal is expected to be wrapped up before the summer. The Blues came out of a two-window transfer ban in January but Frank Llayers can play their normal games in their normal balance of minutes tonight, Miami won’t have to worry about the consistency of the point guard position any more.

Kings owner favors lottery tweaks, tourney for final playoff spot

In a Q&A with Vivek Ranadive, majority owner of the , Ranadive discussed the subject of tanking and his solution for it. It’s a radical system that’s less aggressive than the so-called “wheel plan” and features a tournament for the 8th and final playoff spots in each conference.

That’s the V Plan. Do you want me to tell you the V Plan?

So, basically, we have this issue with how the draft happens and people allegedly tanking. Soour this season because the race for Champions League places is “very open.”Chelsea are stuck in 11th place after six games and they are yet to win at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard’s reign this season. Mount said: “Look at the table, how ma when I was flying back from the conference, someone looked at me and asked, “Hey, have you thought about this?” People have come up with different ideas — this idea of The Wheel, and this and that. And so I thought about it and I came up with a solution that I believe will solve most of the issues, and I call it the V Plan.

There’s two parts to it. Part one is that you freeze the draft order at the time of the All-Star break. Then, everything [pertaining to the current lottery system] remains the same, but it’s frozen based on the standings at the All-Star break. Then there’s no gain in not playing at the highest level for the remainder of the season. That’s part one.

Part two is that at the end of the season, the top seven teams from the Eastern Conference and the top seven teams from the Western Conference make the playoffs. Then for the eighth playoff spot, the remaining eight teams have a sudden-death, college-style playoff in a neutral venue, like Vegas in the West and Kansas or Louisville in the East. (Note: This idea is similar to Bill Simmons’ “Entertaining as Hell Tournament,” first floated here and was discussed by Silver in his chat with Gladwell at the Sloan Conference.)

That would inject such excitement into the league. Teams would no longer be incentivized to lose. Their fans would have something to hope for, like a Cinderella team that got into the eighth spot. It would solve most ofurope is within their grasp.Victory at Brescia was Milan’s fourth on the bounce under coach Stefano Pioli.“Our goal is Europe, we must continue like this, we can’t relax. Another battle awaits us in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday,” said Donnarumma.“ the issues that we’re facing with the way the draft happens right now.

via .

The first part is easy, and not a bad solution. You have a half-seasoncker Memphis Depay. The Mirror says ex-Manchester United player Depay has sent the rumour mill into overdrive after a video he posted on Instagram. The Netherlands international’s video showed him boarding a plane along with the message ‘Merci Lyon’, w to tank, then you can start getting better. This has a few advantages. If your star player blows out his knee, you can secure yourself a good pick, then make a trade at the deadline to try and make the playoffs and compete. I’m on board with that one.

As far as the tournament option, Simmons’ idea is always met with excitement from fans. It has to be collectively bargained though, and that could be a problem. Additionally, a lot of teams just want to be done after all their misery. Even if the Sixers hadn’t traded away and , would you really want to put them through having to play an extra game? I think taking maybe the final four teams in each conference would be a better plan. It’s shorter, would get the team within reasonable reach, and spare us having to watch the Lakers again.

Either way, with an owner on board such change, you can see that the future of the NBA in regards to the draft lottery and tanking is going to change some way, some how.

Why Andrew Wiggins’ early tourney exit doesn’t limit his potential

Andrew Wiggins lost.

In a round-of-32 game against upstart Stanford, Andrew Wiggins, who many feel is the best pick in the draft, finished with six field goal attempts, four points, four turnovers, one assist, and a very big anchor around his neck.

Let me sum up the narratives that immediately, and I mean, immediately erupted in the media after the game. And not just from pundits who love to make a name for themselves, either. Former players, coaches, lots of folks.

“Andrew Wiggins needs to stay another year because clearly he is not ready for the because in a guard-heavy system under a coach who has consistently shown that he does better developing underrated talent than pushing the limits of a top-end prospect, he failed to advance past two rounds in one-and-done tournament at age 19.”

Welcome to 2014, where everything is dead before it begins.

Let’s take a moment and step away from Narrativeville, Population: Cranky Old Dudes.

Maybe you’re new here, and you’re wondering “What’s so special about the kid? He only shot six times, and he was a non-factor in a loss. Why is everyone so excited about him?”

Well, here’s a good place to start.

That’s a block, full-court sprint and alley-oop finish from auded Eddie Nketiah for his ‘phenomenal’ work-rate.The 20-year-old found the back of the net in Mon for all programming watched during the 2018/19 season, a six per cent increase on the previous campaign, reports, /.Working in partnership with industry analyst Nielsen, England’s top-flight soccer league also found that the cumulative audience for day’s FA Cup fifth-round win over Portsmouth, his third goal since re-joining the club last month from a loan spell with Leeds United.”He has been phena leap from the second stripe in five seconds. Athleticism can be overrated, especially in the draft. But elite athleticism like that is the foundation of a capable NBA All-Star. The skilled guys are usually, not always, but usually guys who had an athletic bedrock and built their abilities around it. Wiggins has that bedrock and plenty of work started on the abilities side of it, too.

So then what happened?

Look, I’m not here to outright defend Andrew Wiggins. Throughout the season, he was cast with the label of being too passive. He would drift. Some 19 year-olds come in and have the mental makeup to tell older, more established guys “I want the ball, give it to me, I’ve got this.” Others have to work their way into it. And maybe Wiggins will struggle with the same problem in a locker room full of older guys in the NBA.

But we hammer Carmelo Anthony for not playing a team game, for playing too much isolation, for being a black hole, and then we blame Andrew Wiggins because he tried to work within the set of the offense?

Bill Self is arguably the best coach in college basketball. You live in Kansas City for two years, you learn how incredible of a coach he is. He gets through to the kids, he builds them as a team, he wins game after game after game, conference title after conference title.

Former KU forward Darrell Arthur said this week that playing for Bill Self helps make guys better pros long-term because of what they learn at KU. I think that’s absolutely true. They learn a deeper, more fundamental understanding of how to succeed in team basketball, how to be a professional, how to conduct themselves.

But the fact remains that top talent recruits have not only been rare a KU, when they’ve played under Self their draft stock has plummeted. His system is conducive to winning games, to winning titles. It’s not the best for showcasing talent, especially not on the wing.

I went back through KU’s possessions in the second half of the loss to Stanford expecting to find that Wiggins really was too passive. That he deserves the blame for not forcing the issue. The evidence paints a different picture.

(Tangent: Can we maybe take a second and recognize that maybe, just maybe, Stanford just played better? They rebounded well, they executed a zone against a team that couldn’t stretch the floor, and they made plays. Sometimes this stuff happens. Sometimes the other guys are just better and it doesn’t have to be a reflection on one player’s entire career. This is the crux of my point.)

This was the one that stuck out to me the most. Wiggins nabs the offensive rebound. He’s covered by two guys. Is he supposed to force it up there? He kicks it out and the offense resets. He tries .The Daily Record says a cluster of fringe players have emerged as potential money makers for Liverpool over the coming months with five individuals set for the exit door. The likes of Ryan Kent, Harry Wilson and Nathaniel Clyne among others could fetto get the ball back, he’s ready, he’s calling for the ball.

Nope. Nothing. Sorry. Meanwhile, the possession ends in a highly contested layup attempt over two bigger players.

Here, a teammate literally has to tell his point guard by pointing to get him the ball. Wiggins winds up drawing a foul.

This was an awful possession for Wiggins. He takes the ball and just tries to create too much through the zone, getting stripped and the resulting tie-up has a Stanford possession arrow.

Wiggins spreads the floor here, finds a seam and puts up a quality shot. He doesn’t airball, he doesn’t badly miss. He just rims out. Basketball.

There’s a steal and Wiggins bolts to the rim. He has a lob opportunity. The move to try and find the open outside shooter might be the smart one… if the shooter shoots. He doesn’t.

This is not the play of a player who lacks leadership or motivation. There are legit reasons to lean towards one of the other prospects. But before we bury Wiggins under overhyped labels, maybe consider how we got here and why we shouldn’t overreact to a single game. After all, Rock Chalk and all that.

Lakers GM Kupchak open to trading pick, coach could depend on decision

GM Mitch Kupchak told the LA Daily News that he’s open to the idea of trading the Lakers’ first-round pick. And he said the directio been suggested Griezmann, who has declared he will leave Atletico Madrid, will arrive at Barca to replace Coutinho. But a source close to the Brazilian has denied the midfielder is set to make way.The insider told AS: “It’s not true that Griezmann isn of the Lakers’ coaching search could be determined by what the Lakers do with the pick.

Yet, Kupchak maintained his stance from last month’s exit meetings that the Lakers are open toward trading their current first-round pick should they find a suitable offer.

“It may be a factor,” he said. “You can only trade a pick if you have a trading partner, too. So their willingness and what they would be willing to give up would be dependent on the pick.”

Another variable perhaps more complicating: the Lakers’ coaching search.

Kupchak reiterated he will remain patient with that process and acknowledged there “is a correlation” between the order of the Lakers’ draft pick and who the team selects as its next head coach. It appears likely the Lakers either will opt for a younger coach if they keep their draft pick or a veteran coach if the Lakers somehow upgrade their roster through a trade.

via .

The Lakers are sixth in the lottery. You’d assume that if they were to land a top-three spot, they would keep the pick unless someone like Kevin Love suddenly became available for the pick. But if they stay at six or fall, they could use it to acquire a veteran who could help. Who that would be is the uncertain part. In truth, the Lakers’ plan beyond “do everything” is kind of up in the air. Kupchak admits in the interview that the new CBA has limited the Lakers’ plan to rebuild through spending.

Additionally interesting in all of this is that Dante Exum, who would seemingly fit well in LA, tested well at the combine and could land outside of sixth. If the Lakers can’t find a veteran to acquire with the sixth pick, would they consider trading up to get Exum or someone else?

The coach question is similarly interesting. Lionel Hollins is a rumored candidate, but he wouldn’t do well with a young team. George Karl may be in the same boat. But a younger assistant, like Quin Snyder, whose name has been mentioned? That might be different.

Looming over all of this is , and what impact he’ll have on the team’s direction. It’s looking like a Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho remains keen on West Ham defender Issa Diop.Sky Sports says Tottenham have identified Diop as a long-term replacement for Jan Vertonghen.Spurs boss Mourinho wants Vertonghen to sign a contract extension, but is still hopeweird, eventful summer for the Lakeis the first time Lampard has a full week to work with his players since August.”Yes, maybe. Don’t try and figure out what’s going to happen with this. There is no predicting anything. The Heat had the on the ropes and got clocked in the fourth quarter. The Pacers sat their starters, all five of them, and beat Milwaukee on a buzzer beater.

Total. Chaos.

Indiana and Miami face off Friday on South Beach, but this isn’t as big a deal as you think it is. Here’s why. A Miami win would tie the season series. After that, tiebreaker goes to conference record. The Pacers lead Miami in that category by three games. Miami can’t catch Indiana in that category without beating them out in overall record.

Here are the contingencies based on what could happen Friday:

If Indiana wins and goes 3-0, Indiana gets the No.1 seed. If Indiana wins and goes 2-1, Indiana gets the No. 1 seed. If Indiana wins and goes 1-2, Miami must go 3-1 to get the No. 1 seed. If Miami wins and goes 4-0, Miami gets the No.1 seed. If Miami wins and goes 3-1, Indiana must go 2-1 to get the No. 1 seed. IF Miami wins and goes 2-2, Indiana must go 1-2 to get the No. 1 seed.

Huge night for the Raps on Wednesday. Their magic number going into the night was four, based on tiebreaker. But their win over the Sixers clinched a better division record than Brooklyn. So they gained one on the magic number with the win, one with getting tiebreaker, and then the Magic beat Brooklyn.
